You have a fairly long drive ahead of you.
You could go south on 71 and hook up with I-40 to cross Oklahoma, northern Texas, New Mexico and part of Arizona to get to Flagstaff.
Or you could go directly east from Kansas City, cross Kansas into Colorado and Utah before heading south to AZ.
Either of these trips would be great, with many attractions, historic sites and parks (state and national) to visit along the way.
If I were doing it I would go south, but then I like desert scapes.
Each state has it’s own webpage and they are full of information for tourists. Just do a yahoo search for the state name.
The link below is to Roadside America, this site has listed (by state) unusual and wacky attractions.
It does (of course) list the more usual sights and attractions too.
Take the time to have a look; it is fun and informative:http://www.roadsideamerica.com/map.html
    cul8r_32,
it was interesting; when I plugged the two place names into mapquest, it returned the southern route:http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.…
If you do cross Arizona, visit Meteor Crater, just off I-40 near Winslow, it is an awesomely big hole!

depending on how you go there are many wonderful sites. My personal favorite is to go into colorado then take U.S. 160 across the state. This will take you across Wolf Creek Pass and down into Durango and Cortez, Col.
Staying on 160 go to four corners and then go north on U.S. 89 and 89 alt. to Navaho bridge and possibly the ferry site. (if you are lucky you will be able to see California Condors at the bridge because they nest in one of the cliffs near the bridge.)
Back track on 89 until you get to the road to the Grand Canyon. visit it and then go into Flagstaff and on into Phoenix.
I have made this trip several times and am planning on doing it again this fall. If i can be of more help, just sent me an email.
    Enjoy the trip.
