Baseball Fans Are You Jealous?
I live in Phoenix so this week after we’re done hosting the Super Bowl and the FBR Open PGA gold tourney. We get Spring Training! Live baseball 2 months before everyone else except FLA!
Professional Baseball Athletes?
I recently moved to the Phoenix area in Arizona. I have a big question. I used to live in the Midwest. As you would probably know there is very short summers and long and cold winters. The baseball talent up there was okay but to find the real stars you would have to find kids like Kevyn Feiner from Sun Prairie,WI. That kid worked his butt off and commited him self to baseball. He was a great athlete. He played football too. He had an indoor batting cage and some other little things. Kevyn is now playing for the Dayton Dragons (Minor Leagues). My point is, to be looked at in the Midwest, you have to be a star. Which means you either have to be blessed with natural talent, and or you need to be 110% committed to finding a way to work out in the cold winter. And when I lived in WI I can’t say that was an easy thing to do.
Since I’ve moved to Phoenix, I’ve found that there really is a lot of talent. But I know why. These kids can play baseball or any sport for that matter almost 10 – 11 months out of the year. I’ve obviously realize the talent in the Southern States is probably a lot better in almost any sport. Except for the indoor sports you can do anywhere in the world like basketball, hockey, etc. Since I’m only in High School, It would take loads of money to start building domes all over the midwest for baseball players to have a place to play.
My “BIG” dream is to become a major league baseball player just like any other kid who loves sports. So my question is, what percentage of Major League Baseball Players come from The south. Even better, what percent of Major League Baseball Players come from ARIZONA. I will do that math if you can lead me to a good source. Links, Ideas, what ever works. i’m just trying to see whats good! Thank YOU!

Do I Have A Shot At Playing D1 Baseball? And What Sud I Do To Improve My Chances To Get There?
I am senior in high school but am returning for an extra year.I am 6’0 tall, and weigh about 172 lbs. I play on a AAA tavel team called the Northwest Slam Renegades. My positions are infield corners and my arm velocity is in the mid 80′s. I bat a consistant 3rd in the order with a 0.380 average. I also lead the team in extra base hits and RBI’s. My 60 yrd time is around 7.0 seconds. I also just went to an ABC (Americas Baseball Camps) camp in Phoenix last week and recieved ABC player of the camp which is their version of MVP. I am told I have a great work ethic and drive on and off the field. Also, I scored a 1461 on my SATs. I don’t know so much about the recuiting for college baseball in the States since I live in Canada and was just wondering if I have an honest shot.

Are There Any Good Work Out Baseball Fields In Arizona?
I am 15 and there is no good place to go that has high school dimensions with a grass infield. Any suggestions? I’ll take answers from anywhere in Arizona but it would be very nice if there was something around phoenix. I’m talking about something that is open to the public with maybe some cost.
Rudy Lavecchia – Rebuilding an Incredible Presence Known as Baseball
It’s baseball’s time, having just finished a great World Series with the largest ratings jump this year in history for the World Series. So let me merge my branding brain and my baseball heart for this blog posting.
do not be fooled by the ratings jump ; the brand of baseball is seriously challenged. Some suggestions :
Continued long-term falling trend in the ratings for the all-star game and the World Series.
soccer is our traditional sport, while baseball is reliant on local team interest
a fortnight ago, on Sun. the NY Giants/Phoenix game and the 6th and last game of the ALCS ( Yankees, Angels ) went head to head and got equal state ratings. Yet, in NY, the Yankees’ TV ratings blew away the Giants.
Ironically, while major league baseball’s appeal is local in the US, japanese stars playing in the US major leagues give it state appeal in Japan. Folk all around Japan took an extended lunch to observe Matsui have a striking game and they might have done the same for Ichiro. BTW, Chien-Ming Wang ( until he was injured ) was the largest sporting star in Taiwan.
The World Series TV ratings are about 4X higher in the home cities of the teams playing than elsewhere. This is a typical pattern for baseball but not soccer.
The Yankees lift road attendance by 6,500 fans/game ( twenty p.c. or so % increase for opposing clubs’ home attendance ). Apart from the Red Sox, Dodgers, and cubs, no other team has any effect. Soccer pretty much sells out no matter what.
The star quality of Baseball players has been eclipsed by basketball and other sports.
Forbes’ list of top a hundred celebs only has one baseball player-Derek Jeter at 66. A number of basketball players are at the top of the list, and there are multiple tennis, racecar, and football stars, and, of course, Tiger Woods is Tiger ( top rated ). Apparently I didn’t see any football stars.
until the 70s, arranged sports’ biggest stars appeared to come from baseball ( and whoever was heavyweight fighting champion ) : Cobb, Ruth, DiMaggio, Williams, Mantle, Mays, Clemente
Among team sports, I suspect football owns’spectacle’
Nothing appears to match the vision price of the Superbowl, Sat. college games, bowl games.
Superbowl ratings are 4-5X the World Series and the only sporting occassion showing consistent INCREASES in TV ratings notwithstanding the media long-tail fragmentation phenomenon.
I believe basketball is tops on cultural connection
Basketball is the sports embodiment of urban culture. many of our phrases come from urban culture and are part of basketball these days. Remember when baseball proverbs dominated?
Our culture is interested in trash-talk and ultimate fighting. In other sports we trash-talk, fight, do victory dances. In baseball, we don’t thieve 2nd if we are up by too many runs, warn both sides after a bean ball, never show up the pitcher on a home run or the hitter on a strikeout, we never trash talk. Baseball etiquette reflects days gone by.
Baseball feels too slow to several in our ADD, multitasking culture ( although, nothing is slower than golf and take a look at Tiger’s appeal ). The World Series, our biggest stage, starts so late that it is losing the viewership of the nations’ young who have to go to college the following day.
Having announced all this, baseball has amazing assets on which to rebuild. In the flick town Slickers, around the campfire one of the pals expounded,’When my father and I had zip else to talk about, there was always baseball’ True dat.
As a passionate fan, here are some suggestions I freely offer built around five cornerstones : make the game state and world ( rather than only local ), reignite the zeal that fans have from childhood, make baseball permeate culture, make baseball up to date and cool, play to the game as theatre.
push your stars better and turn them into countrywide idols ( that’s's part of why Jeter is number one ).
Enflame the keenness that folk feel for their team and create passion for their league so they have a rooting interest in the World Series and All-Star game.
Join the digital age! Augmented reality, integrated stats ( mlb.com and espn.com supply a lot ), social media at the sport and team level, and instant replay.
Create national and world relevance for baseball. Ethnic pride, stars, integration into culture can transcend local rooting interest and are all big assets baseball has ( but could do more with ).
there’s poetry and beauty to baseball. The baseball diamond is gorgeous. There is no clock which makes for excitement. In the 60s, fans used to be able to exit Yankee stadium on the field along the running track. That was a religious experience so why not again, at least occasionally?
Please add your own thoughts about what baseball has to do to fulfill its billing as our national hobby.
